Φ-1A Φ is the product of a year-long collaboration project between students of Art & Science and researchers at MedAustron, a particle acceleration center using ion therapy for cancer treatment. The most striking part of this experience to me was how long it took for the students and the researchers to find a common language to position themselves in relation to the research that was happening there. The resulting work plays with this observation by creating a space in which this desoriontation can be experienced. As the viewer approaches the projection surface, they enter the projection itself and then dissolve into abstracted noise processes as they get too close. The matrix multiplication Φ-1A Φ is a concise way of formulating the translation of a process from one frame of reference to another – to tell the same story in different languages, so to speak.
